One of the sweeter, goofier elements of a “Succession” season mired in a quagmire of delusion and dysfunction has been the budding romance — which is to say, a largely one-sided fixation — of the Roy family’s favorite bumbling, outsider cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) and Comfry (Dasha Nekrasova), one of Kendall’s (Jeremy Strong) public relations reps. Things between the two took a huge step forward in the most recent episode of “Succession,” “Too Much Birthday,” but first, let’s review....

“I’ll put it to you this way,” Alonso said. “I was talking to the head makeup artist and she’s in charge of ordering the blood — that’s one of her many jobs. She told me that all of Season 2… When you talk about bulk, I don’t think they used over a gallon of blood in Season 2, believe it or not. Season 3, we’re already at three and a half gallons of blood....

We’ll be getting to know the next generation of “The Boys” supes sooner than we think. But it is in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category where the groundwork for a battle is set: previous nominee Helen Bonham Carter, playing Princess Margaret, stands to go up against Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher....

Like the male “Equalizer” characters, Latifah’s McCall is a former intelligence operative for the CIA who became disillusioned with the government’s methods and opted for civilian life. What prompts her to enter a new career of reformer is a chance entanglement with the case of a young woman — Jewel (Lorna Courtney) — framed for murder and on the run from the real killers, who are backed by an Elon Musk-esque tech executive....

As Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) says upon entering the minimalist house designed by brilliant architect Edward Monkford (David Oyelowo), “It feels like it’s waiting for someone.” The house itself has everything: a below market rent, a housekeeper system that would make Siri blush, and a list of rules that includes not bringing any personal items. Jane is selected by Edward to move into the house and once there she discovers the house comes with a history, including the recent death of a young woman named Emma (Jessica Plummer)....

The whispered warning triggers the dramatic survival story at the heart of “The Last of Us,” the HBO series adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise of the same name. “The Mandalorian” star Pedro Pascal leads the Western-inspired series opposite “Catherine Called Birdy” and “Game of Thrones” breakout Bella Ramsey as two survivors of the apocalypse. What kind of movie is this? Asking yourself that question can be one of the most exciting experiences in moviegoing. It happens a number of times during Mark Mylod’s “The Menu,” a movie that combines genres in the cinematic equivalent of fusion cuisine: it’s a satire, then a thriller, and ultimately a horror movie. Seth Reiss and Will Tracy’s script landed on the 2019 Black List, and it’s easy to see why: with its trapped-diners premise and the evisceration of those with power, it’s “The Exterminating Angel” for the franchise era....

What set Emmett’s murder and Mamie’s crusade apart from other lynchings of the time — of which there were many — was Mamie’s fierce dedication to showing, quite literally, what a pair of white Mississippi men (and, perhaps, others) had done to her boy. Showing Emmett’s desecrated body at his very public funeral, a ruined, bloated, mutilated shell of the vibrant child, was a non-negotiable for Mamie, and it’s the same for Chinonye Chukwu’s “Till,” which offers a lightly dramatized version of Emmett and Mamie’s story, one that only comes to life when daring to be as fierce, as confrontational, and as passionate as the real Mamie....

Gambale had to rethink his aesthetic for the sensitive, predominantly Yiddish-language drama from showrunner Anna Winger and director Maria Schrader, inspired by Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir, “Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots.” “You’re almost in documentary territory with the responsibility you have toward the music,” he said. “You have to be careful not to be melodramatic. It’s even more crucial to be totally aware of why you’re using music in scenes....

Netflix premiered the third season of its “Virgin River” romantic-drama series July 9 and the show’s latest batch of episodes drew in over 1.4 million viewers in its premiere week, according to the latest report from Nielsen. The show toppled Disney+’s “Loki,” which had been leading Nielsen’s reports for several weeks; “Loki” was the second-most viewed show of the week, with 1.08 million viewers. The viewership success of “Virgin River,” which boasts 30 episodes between its three seasons, is all the more impressive given the timing of its Season 3 premiere....

And while there have long been ways to experience live theater outside of the whole live thing — PBS’ “Great Performances” has been tirelessly working a variation of this beat for nigh on 50 years — Broadway has faced criticism for creating a playground for the elite, where only the wealthiest portion of Americans can experience the greatest theater experiences. While everyone and their mother knows about “Hamilton,” fewer are familiar with Schreck’s play, in which she revisits the competitions she competed in while a teenager, speaking about the constitution — hence the title — in order to earn scholarship money to go to college....

Fans of “Yellowstone” have a lot to look forward to in the near future. Sheridan continues to expand his television empire at a whiplash-inducing pace, with several new “Yellowstone” spin-offs in development. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are set to star in the prequel series “1923,” which will stream on Paramount+. Sheridan is also executive producing the spin-off “6666” for Paramount Network, which will be set in the present day and take place at a different ranch that competes with the Dutton family business....
